Day 8: Travel Day to Edinburgh & Spending the night in a castle!
Spent most of the day traveling to Edinburgh with a short layover in Aberdeen in which I hung out with a seagull and pondered awhile about 2 things: how he got in a roofed building and where the heck all my socks that I brought have gone?
After I arrived in “Eddinburra”, I walked across the street from the train station right into a really cool bar for a drinky poo or 2 and a nosh before hailing a taxi. I’m really loving this doing whatever I freaking feel like doing thing! Little tidbit of the day: it’s against the law to keep your tab open at a bar in the U.K.… “The more you know”. (If you recognize that T.V. PSA from the 80’s, good on ya!) 😉
When I first took the picture below, I thought it was the Edinburgh Castle, it wasn’t. That comes tomorrow. Thank God cuz I wasn't that impressed. Its where the Governor resides or something.
However I’m staying overnight in a real converted castle! Melville Castle is a few miles outside Edinburgh and it is absolutely beautiful and has the most amazing grounds with lots of wooded trails. I took short walk tonight just before it got dark but I’ll explore more in the morning after breakfast. My little room is so gorgeous and in my head, I’m just a little princess for the evening. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here after returning from growing up in the French Royal Court. Her “lover” David Rizzio also stayed here and it reportedly started her downfall.
Royal Mile & Edinburgh Castle tomorrow… then off to The Lake District in jolly ‘ol England.
Nite, nite Party People! xx
P.S. I had to wait to morning to post these additional pics of Queen Mary's Trees on the castle grounds. In this enclosure are 6 six trees… one was planted by David Rizzio in honor of Queen Mary during one of his stays here and as a way of showing her deep devotion and “friendship”, she had 5 more planted. These trees have stood here since the mid 1500's. It’s one of the reasons her husband Lord Darnley suspected her of adulterous actions, which led to her arrest, imprisonment, and eventual execution.
